I'm learning a lot about my family through the photographs my parents are kindly sharing with me. I can understand how protective of them they are--especially my mom--since the photos are, in many cases, over 50 years old and I'm getting the only copy of most of them.
That's part of the reason why I'm trying to electronically archive them, so that they'll stay around. That, and so my sisters and I can share in the memories. For many of these pictures, it's the first time I'm seeing them, and in the new batch, my mom told me a bit of the stories behind them, or at least the people in them, though there's still much more to learn. Some things I may never truly learn because, for instance, her birth mom died when she was 5, so I'm not sure what, if any, strong memories my mom has of her.
But, for what I can learn, I'm going to try to learn more about my parents' past. I have very vague sketches of that that I've been given over the years because that's not something they talked much about. The photos are actually opening that up a little, giving me some stories that I hope to remember.
For instance, I don't think I ever knew my mom had a younger sister that died of a brain tumor when she was really young. My mom pointed this out to me in the photos of her.
My mom also told me of a photo in which she didn't like her hair, and recalled a bad haircut she had received.
I'm fortunate that I have a chance to learn more of my family's history from my mom and dad. I never got to know any of my grandparents very well and could well imagine the history they had stored in them.
